EHMA 2013 SUSTAINABILITY AWARD BY DIVERSEY GOES TO MICHEL COTTRAY, GM OF THE WESTIN RESORT THE ROMANOS, GREECE
The 2013 award is dedicated to the improvement of sustainable hospitality by means of environmental protection and preservation. This yearly award, 2nd edition, was announced on the occasion of the closing ceremony of the European Hotel Managers Association annual General Meeting which took place in Milan, Italy, from April 25 to 28. The outgoing EHMA 1st Vice-President, Michel Fernet, presented the winner, Michel Cottray, general manager of The Romanos, a Westin Luxury Collection Resort in Greece, Costa Navarino.
«We are really proud to state that, once again, we received so many valuable applications that the jury found it hard to determine the winning project» reports Johanna Fragano, EHMA Treasurer and past president. She was member of the judging panel together with Ed Roberts delegate from Diversey and Arjan Van Rheede, consultant at VanRheede Onderzoek & Advies and researcher at Hotelschool The Hague.
The evaluation criteria of the Sustainability Award by Diversey consist of forward-looking plans and out-of-the box approaches which facilitate the perfect matching of sustainability with hotel bottom line accounting, security, risk management and corporate responsibility issues. People – Profit – Planet are thus part of this innovative concept of perfect balance between business and environment. Diversey, in partnership with EHMA for the award, specializes in the supply of sustainable and innovative cleaning and hygiene solutions.
The winning Greek resort turned out to be exceeding the conventional idea of sustainability by means of an advanced holistic approach which pays special attention to energy, water, waste reduction and environment care. That was made possible thanks to relevant business partners but also to staff and guests involvement in waste reduction and wise water consumption.
«We wish to underline», explains Johanna Fragano «that ‘green’ does not simply refer to ethics but also to the hotel business cost rationalization and economic performance improvement».
That opinion was undoubtedly shared by all participants to this 2013 award edition. The other general managers who applied to this special award deserve to be mentioned: Miguel Cazon, Hotel Tres Reyes in Pamplona (Spain), Francesco Cirillo, Aqualux Hotel Spa Suite & Terme of Bardolino (Italy), Emmanuel Sydney Manousos, Apollonia Beach Resort & Spa, Crete (Greece), Tomas Feier-Frölich, Disneyland Hotel in Paris (France), Albert Rowendal, Mövenpick Hotel in Amsterdam (The Netherlands) and Olivier Servat, W Paris Opéra (France).
