The 2002 European Hotel Manager of the year award went to Jean K van Daalen, general manager of the prestigious Hotel Adlon in Berlin. A member of the EHMA since 1974, the year it was founded, it was very special for him to receive this recognition at the Association's 30th anniversary general meeting in Rome. Born in Milan, van Daalen is a hotelier with exceptional management skills and broad international experience. Following extensive travels throughout Europe managing Hilton Hotels, he was appointed GM of the Nassauer Hof in Wiesbaden in 1972. During 8 years, he directed the propertys complete restructuring, extension and renovation programmes, the result of which was the inclusion in The Leading Hotels of the World. In 1980 van Daalen moved to Berlin on behalf of the Steigenberger Group, where he was solely responsible for the pre-opening phase of the companys Berlin property. He stayed as GM for over seven years. In 1987 Club Corporation Europe persuaded him to move to Paris to develop and manage a variety of key construction projects, including Margarethenhof on Tegernsee, Gut Kaden in Hamburg and the Airport Club in Frankfurt. By 1990 this was extended to include the investment in and development of hotel properties. In 1994 van Daalen chose to return to Berlin to develop Euromedien Babelsberg GmbH Berlin as director for project and marketing, where he was responsible for developing a film and recreational centre in the Media City Babelsberg. In 1996 he accepted an offer from Kempinski to take charge of the pre-opening and opening phases of what was to become the companys flagship hotel. Under his direction and leadership Hotel Adlon has become an international by-word of innovative standards and unparalleled excellence throughout the entire hospitality industry. 500 employees are there to satisfy the guests every need and provide excellent service.
