FRANCE HAS WON THE 2014 EHMA SUSTAINABILITY AWARD BY DIVERSEY CARE
Fabrice Moizan, General Manager of Hôtel Fouquet's Barrière in Paris, was awarded the prize by the European Hotel Managers Association
The Sustainability Award in its third edition was given to a consistent and long term innovative project which involves the reforestation of 40 hectares by means of fund raising and cooperation with the local community and other industry stakeholders. Fabrice Moizan succeeded in building up a strong team spirit within his hotel staff members thus distinguishing himself for commitment and leadership qualities.
The criteria of the EHMA Sustainability Award by Diversey Care were perfectly met: they are meant to make the most of hospitality professionals' initiative and courage in an economically sustainable business. The nomination was announced on occasion of the last EHMA General Meeting which took place in Monaco from March 28 to 30 2014. The meeting title itself was «Hospitality, Sustainability... what's next?».
The winning reforestation project, the Hotel Fouquet's Barrière Grape Harvest, started in 2009 in cooperation with wine grower Marie-Laure Lurton and the Municipality of Gabardon. They partnered up around a charitable and sustainable project: the idea consisted in harvesting grapes, put the harvest up for auction and use all the proceeds to help replanting 40 hectares of forest in the Landes Department of France as well as research into biodiversity.
The activity still goes on and involves every year, in the month of September, the Hôtel Fouquet's Barrière staff members. They work closely with Marie-Laure Lurton and her wine grower team to harvest grapes on the estate which is endorsed by Terra Vitis, an important French eco-friendly association of wine growers and wine makers. In the reception of the Hôtel Fouquet's Barrière then, during the following spring, the result of the harvest is auctioned and the relevant proceeds are donated to finance the award winning sustainable development program.
Training programs on forestry and its future outlook are also organized.
Diversey Care, the EHMA Sustainability Award sponsor, specializes in the supply of sustainable and innovative cleaning and hygiene solutions, EHMA and Diversey Care together mean to improve and award the concept of sustainability by means of forward-looking plans and out-of-the box approach which facilitate the perfect matching of sustainability with bottom line accounting, security, risk management and corporate responsibility issues, actually related to the triadic concept of People-Profit-Planet.
Fabrice Moizan
Fabrice Moizan was appointed General Manager at Fouquet's Barrière in 2010. In his past experience he supervised the opening of Radisson Blu Monastir Resort, Thalasso & Spa, in Tunisia and held hospitality professional top positions: Food & Beverage Manager, Incoming Sales Manager, Deputy Manager and Director of Operations at Hotel Normandy Barrière, Royal Barrière and du Golf Barrière in Deauville.
Since the beginning of his career at the Hotel Fouquet's Barrière in Paris, Fabrice Moizan has been deeply personally involved in the winning project, in fact he has participated with his staff 4 harvesting editions from the start, in the vineyards, to the auction supervision in the hotel premises. A great experience which, in his opinion "would never have been possible" without the strong team spirit he was able to build up with 400 hotel employees.
Many outstanding personalities convened to the Award ceremony in Monaco. The sponsor was represented by Dr. Ilham Kadri, President of the Diversey Care Division, vice president and officer at Sealed Air Corp. global leader in food care and packaging, facility hygiene and product protection. She stated that by now sustainability is the new 'quality index' within the hospitality industry: «The either "green" or profitable bottom line" dilemma is disappearing –we can have both. Diversey Care is committed to using its knowledge and expertise to identify the best solutions for the hospitality industry
The European Hotel Managers Association rewards a brilliant and impressive career
The manager of the year is François Delahaye, General Manager Plaza Athénée Paris and Chief Operating Officer Dorchester Collection. The prestigious European Manager of the Year Award was presented by the EHMA President Hans Koch in recognition of his brilliant career in the luxury hotel business. The ceremony was held at the magnificent Salle Empire of the Hôtel de Paris in Monaco on March 29th, on the occasion of the 41st EHMA General Meeting gala dinner.
On receiving the award François Delahaye said he was impressed by the recognition from an association that represents managers of the highest quality hotels in Europe. Beyond his personal qualities, Delahaye is recognized for his sensitivity to the staff and his commitment to clients. Throughout his remarkable career, loyalty, respect and trust are the significant core values. He has won international prizes as celebrated hotelier but the appreciation shown by the employees who have become successful managers under his tuition means a lot more to him. “I am touched when they return after a while to thank me for the good schooling I gave them. Respect is what it is all about in our profession”.
For more than twenty years François Delahaye has had a very successful career in the luxury hotel business and in December 1999 this led to his appointment as General Manager of the Hôtel Plaza Athénée in Paris. He had begun work in 1973 as footman to the Duke of Westminster. Upon his appointment, he managed a post renovation stage, calling on the celebrated chef Alain Ducasse, who transferred his restaurant to the Plaza Athénée in September 2000. Now, at the age of 58, François Delahaye manages a staff of more than 500 and he still implements the basic principle that has been his watchword since his earliest days: “A happy staff makes happy clients”.
As Chief Operating Officer for the Dorchester Collection since 2006, he is responsible for ten luxury hotels: the Plaza Athénée and Meurice in Paris; the Dorchester in London; the Beverly Hills Hotel and Bel–Air Hotel in Los Angeles; the Principe di Savoia in Milan; the Coworth Park in Ascot; the 45 Park Lane in London; the Richemond in Geneva and the Eden in Rome.
In 2013 François Delahaye was named Hotelier of the Year by the leading American luxury network of travel agencies “Virtuoso”.
Every year the European Hotel Managers Association awards general managers of first class and luxury hotels of international reputation who distinguished themselves for excellence in quality, implementation of new strategies, financial improvement, ethical foundation of the profession, staff management and motivation. What matters is also innovation capacity when referring to different hotel departments to manage as well as detecting opportunities to cooperate, exchange and enhance activities in the territory where the property is located.
The Greek manager Panagiotis (Panos) Almyrantis, is the general manager of Daios Cove Luxury Resort and Villas in Crete, Greece since 2010. His outstanding academic background with several recognitions was followed by management of sales and operations departments and then to management of hotels such as Holiday Inn Golf Resort Naples Castel Volturno in Italy (2007-2009) and King George in Athens (2009--2010) which granted him several important awards.
The 2014 European Hotel Manager of the Year award ceremony was held in Geneva on April 18, during the Gala Dinner of the 42nd EHMA annual General Meeting, which took place from April 17 to 19 (www.ehmageneva2015.com). Panagiotis Almyrantis received this prestigious international recognition of excellence from the President of the European Hotel Managers Association Hans E. Koch.
Outstanding results achieved at Daios Cove Luxury Resort & Villas in Crete, especially during hard times for Greece, made Panagiotis Almyrantis deserve the EHMA award. Thanks to his strategic repositioning plan of the resort, he has obtained exceptional results in the hotel key performance indexes.
Figures aside, Panagiotis Almyrantis, 2014 EHMA Manager of the Year, during the management of Daios Cove obtained an impressive series of international awards and recognitions such as Global Luxury Coastal Resort 2014, World Luxury Hotel Award Europe’s Best Luxury Family Hotel 2013 and Russian Condé Nast Traveler 2013 Best Beach Hotel in the World. Daios Cove Luxury Resorts and Villas was listed in the Trip Advisor Travelers Choice starting from 2011 and in the Quality Selection by Holiday Check in 2012 and 2013.
Evaluation and assessment of nominees for the European Hotel General Manager winners is not easy at all for the EHMA Jury. In fact other candidates were equally valuable and deserve to be mentioned: from the Spanish Chapter the GM of Gran Meliá Don Pepe Resort in Marbella, Saad Azzam Faris who in five years after major works was able to reposition the property which is now one of the most prestigious resorts in Spain, from the Swiss Chapter François Dussart, who has been leading for more than ten years the Hotel Beau-Rivage Palace and Hotel Angleterre & Residence in Lausanne and took care of a the hotel SPA and restaurant openings together with  important refurbishments and  from the Italian chapter the GM of Gritti Palace in Venice, Paolo Lorenzoni who supervised an important renovation, relaunched and enhanced the so-called emerging cosmocrat travellers’experience.
